How do you get your dog to bark when the doorbell rings?

How do you get yoru dog to bark when the doorbell rings. We have a 6 month old golden lab and we want him to go to the door and bark when the door bell rings. He hardly ever barks to begin with. He barked once and it scared him. I know– wierd. Anywho. The only tricks he has learned is to sit. How do you teach him to bark at the ring of the doorbell. Please give me suggestions. Thanks.
He also doesn’t bark to go out either. He just sits there. I just need pointer on how to get my dog to bark :-)

I have a Yorkie, to get her to where she barks when she hears cars pull up, people knocking, or car doors shutting outside we just started saying who’s here?? Over and over… she would get so excited and bark. Now we can say who’s here, she’ll still bark. But she also barks when she hears the sounds herself. I don’t know how successful other people would be in doing that. It worked very well for us. If you have any questions, let me know! Good luck!

  4. trust me, dont do it. my neighbour did that, and now the dog barks at every noise it hears like if i walk past their door, you’d hear woof!woof! rarf!

  5. hehehe… I’d rather my dog NOT bark when the doorbell rings! He won’t stop!

I’d say treats are the way to go. Have a friend ring the doorbell, when the dog barks, give him a treat. I’d only reward a single bark, or a short series of barks, or you’ll have a terror on your hands like me.

Repeat the ringing and treating several times in a row, so that he understands what action you are rewarding.

  6. Well my dog didn’t bark at the door bell at all either. She was an outdoor dog for over a year before I got her.
She didn’t even know that the door bell meant ppl where at the door.
On Halloween night though the door bell rang a lot, so that helped her realize doorbell means ppl are at the door. She still doesn’t bark at the doorbell though. Only if its us family members and she sees us at the door, then she will bark. But she doesn’t usually bark when the door bell in rung yet, in time I’m sure she will.

  7. You don’t want to do that because it will drive your nabours mad. TRUST ME! You might get fined if your nabours get fed up!

  8. You might be asking for something you regret

    BUT

get REALLY REALLY excited when the door bell rings and run to the door. Keep asking the dog in the meantime “Who’s here” and “Who’s Home” That should get them going…

My dogs NEVER bark to go out I had to get them Poochie Bells. You can find them here
