My review on the awesome Sony prs-600 eReader. No tech-specs and hardware analysis, just my view on this device as something to use every day.

The only thing I DIDN’T like about this Sony PRS-600 is the page flicker as you turn pages. If it didn’t do that, I’d have kept mine (I returned it.)
The JetBook … although it has limitations .. has NO flicker upon page turning… you have to see it to realize what a nice thing it is to not have that flash every time you turn pages.
Observe the screen. It is giving a lot of reflection and you can see this guys image. I once owned one but I returned it because it is very glare. I got a Nook and is very happy now.
I don’t know guys.I still prefer good old paper books.Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I like having a big library in my room and sometimes just sit and look at those shiny book covers(and of course, read them).”A room without books is like a body without a soul.” –Cicero
@KindleTv1 yeah the glare is from the touchscreen indeed, but not that much of an issue i think. Tilting the screen slightly and the problem is solved. And the glare only occurs when there is a lightsource directly on it (like when reading straight under a lamp).
you say the kindle takes more books, i think thisone takes 400 books on the internal memory and when expanded with a SD card it takes 3500 books. way more than youll read in a lifetime either way
Turn it on already !
@ElPopularVale i disagree. The tablets have different screens that will eventually strain your eyes when used over long periods of time (like when reading a book). These readers are SO much more comfortable to read on thanks to the e-ink screen.
These ereaders are very purposely build for reading and reading alone and that is what they should be used for. If you want browsing and movies then indeed you should get another device, but you shouldnt confuse the two.
I’d rather buy a windows ce based tablet. Not only can I read books but also watch movies and listen to music.
Eh, I still prefer the kindle. It’s larger, carries more books, and has more things you can do on it. But, I do agree that the reviews were too hard on this e-reader. The glare is because of the touch screen, if I’m not mistaken. I may be, my knowledge of this e-reader is limited. Like I said, I’m a kindle person…
@CassettePlaya1 yeah very true. The glare is indeed because of the touch screen. BUT that said, personally the glare doesnt bother me that much, tilting the screen slightly and you are good to go.
@peterdoes The Sony PRS-600 was one of the only eBook readers which got bad reviews because of the glare issue. But the only reason it does that is because of the screen layers used to implement the touch technology and also to protect the screen. Harldy any other eBook readers have this problem seen as there aren’t many touch screen eReaders currently on the market.
@biped19 Not really as old school monochrome displays still had to be backlit and the devices that used them didn’t have particularly great battery life plus if left with he same image on display for very longs periods it would “burn” into the screen and have a ghosting effect (on monitors and b&w tv’s anyway). Plus E Ink is a completely different technology as real ink/oil is placed within the screen of the device and electronically charged to change the display image to replicate real paper.
@cjeculver Overall most of the eReaders are very similar. In the fact that they set out to do one main purpose, which is to replicate the look of a traditional book in electronic and digital form. Some have distintive USP’s such as this Sony having a touch screen, the B&N having dual screens, Kindle DX having a large screen etc. But if all your going to be doing is reading then the majority of eReaders are great seen as they get their screen tech from the same company which is E Ink Corporation.
@YIANNIS777 im not sure about the illegal downloads, but in essence it should not be a problem. The device itself does not test for the legal status of the document. If you do an illegal download into PDF, Word or plain text it should work just fine.
Scanned pages show up as an image and this device CAN handle images, but not fantastically so that would be something you have to try out. But in essence it should work decently I think
i am going to touch a sensitive area, so i get it if you cant really answer but… how does it cope on illegal ebook torrent downloads? ? ? is there any software that prevents the files from being read by the reader??? Also some ebook downloads out there are scanned pictures of the pages how does this e reader cope with them?
thanx for any comments !!!!
cheers, good review !
@cjeculver couldnt tell you, i dont own any others
@puneetob YES it does remember where you left off
YES it does let you jump to a page.
uploading goes via an itunes like program, easy as pie, nothing complicated, just plug and play. Think iPod, its pretty much the same.
Boot/load is pretty much instant.
Hi, amazing review, thanks. Few questions – Does it remember where did u leave the book/various books? Does it lets u goto a particular page? How do u upload pdfs on it – is it complicated process or just plug n play? I also hear that it takes lot of time to boot/load books?? Thanks

@cjeculver
I’m sorry if you have buyers remorse. Now go be a good little consumer and buy the next piece of backwards technology. Your chocolate ration has been increased. LOL.
peterdoes, thanks for the review. Unfortunately, I felt most of it was pretty generic — comments that could equally apply to any ebook reader on the market: document. What I’d rather see is a review that distinguishes the PRS-600 from other readers. How is it better or worse?
@biped19 I was just about to agree with you, but then I pulled out my dictionary to make sure I could spell “ignoramus” and you know what — that damn dictionary is in monochrome! I couldn’t believe it, so I grabbed a book. More monochrome! You gotta be kidding me! Billion dollar publishing companies ripping off us retarded consumers who think these .are supposed to be “new” books.
Chill out, dude. Ebook readers are for reading books, not watching movies.
I-G-N-O-R-A-M-U-S.
@biped19 Here ya go, have a chill pill.
@muffinnman the e-ink screen has to reset itself in order to show a new page, that is indeed a small flash/flicker, but hardly noticeable and def not a distraction
Great review I am looking to buy my first eReader and you answered most questions I have.
I would like to know how fast the reader is in turning pages and if the flash when you turn pages is distracting.
How many time has to be a Sony e Reader in charge? Well, at the very beginning it’s supposed to be in charge for 4 hours, but i don’t know how many time it has to be in charge usually, because sometime my e reader has no more battery, i guess that is because i listen to music but sometimes i don’t and it doesn’t last as i expected, even if it is turned off… so could you help me with that? well, i just need an explanation
thank you!
