Mr. Coffee ECM160 4-Cup Steam Espresso Machine

My husband bought this one for me for Christmas and I’ve been cursing at it since. The cord is frighteningly short. I can barely plug it in with it flush against the back wall of the counter.
The coffee filter basket has a different insertion style with those I’ve used previously. You insert it on the left-hand side of the machine and slide the handle to the middle. This is contrary to most machines where the insertion point is in the middle and you slide it to the right. This is awkward and I’ve ended up spilling coffee all over my counter if it does not insert correctly. Once, it was not seated in the slot correctly and spewed coffee grounds and watery coffee all over my counter.
The frother does not work as instructed. I found that if you waited until the coffee was 3/4 brewed and then frothed, it would give you better results. Also, that plastic thing on the frother did not improve the function, so that got taken off.
The top of the caraffe falls off when you try to pour out the coffee. The knobs are not conducive to trying to take it off with that half-concious effort that most of us have in the morning.
My recommendation for an espresso machine would be a Melita (one without the pods). They steam and froth well and are well-designed.
** ETA: After using this maker for a year, I still think there are issues with it. The cord issue is fixed, thanks to another reviewer. There is more cord stored underneath. But the basket handle sticks out 6″ from the front of the machine. Whenever I work on something on that part of the counter, I have to turn the machine 90 degrees. The frother still doesn’t work right, and the coffee pot was broken 6 months ago. I use a coffee cup instead. The rounded knobs are also hard to turn when you are 3/4 asleep.

I was tired of being a slave to the coffee shop so I bought one of these. True, the reviews were mixed but I thought I’d try it because the price was right. In short – It’s a very POOR espresso/capucinno maker on all fronts. Just buy a higher level machine and be done with it…unless you want to waste $30 and be disapointed.

Mr. Coffee Steam Espresso Machine
This works fine if you like boiled milk. The steam is all or nothing, and comes on so hard it boils the milk but doesn’t froth it. Everything else is fine, but why have a cappuccino maker that won’t froth milk?

This is a bare bones espresso/cappuccino machine. It works, but only one step above a drip brew. Spend the extra $50 bucks or so and get something that will last longer and work more functionally- too many complaints about this model to think about writing them all here.
