  1. I had a Sony pocket reader that my daughter kept borrowing, so I thought I would be thrifty by getting the Ectaco reader to have as a second ereader around the house. All the features advertised about the Ectaco are true. However, if you can’t get the files you need onto the reader, the device is completely useless. When we first got the device, we were able to download files onto it. Somehow along the way, my files became corrupt and I couldn’t access anything on it, nor could I download any new files onto it. In our frustration, we blurted out some expletives and resisted the temptation to toss the device across the room. Needless to say, my daughter and I are back to sharing the Sony pocket reader again. I am very happy with the Sony device and for the slightly extra cost for it, the price is well worth it. You will actually be able to download your files and read everything comfortably. I take my Sony pocket reader everywhere. The Ectaco device is now resting in a box along with all my other antiquated, useless, cheap, and dysfunctional electronics up in my storage closet.

  2. i just received my jbl………..two days ago…….. kind of disappointed in the unit……..

i have a 8 gb sd card installed………… i have loaded several books into the card……

when i go to look at a book that’s on the sd card some of them come up saying file to large

therefore i cant see them…… ie one has 30 mb file and i cant read it file to large….

i am wondering just how large of a file will the jbl read……. i guess i shall have to contact the

manufacture……………. as stated by others it read txt file just fine……. i havnt tried all

the type of files it is suppose to read as of yet………… and on the pictures forget it…ka-ka

some are washed out… most you have to tilt the screen just right to see them…not good……

lot of the pic’s i look at are black and white to begin with…….so there is no color issue…..

but i like the unit anyway..so its a keeper…… ill probably use it mostly for text file and info…

book download are probably a hit and miss issue……if i cant read a 30mb book via the 8gb card…not good

  3. Pros:

1.) I like it but am not thrilled with it.

2.) You can use rechargeable batteries

3.) Rear battery compartment gives you something to hold onto.

4.) Has SD card reader, so you can store much more.

5.) You can switch to Horizontal mode, for different view.

    Cons:

1.) There is no back light, (It’s LCD or like an LCD watch). Useless without some light.

2.) The Font may be very tiny just to get enough to read on one page. Otherwise you are reading about 3 sentences per page.

3.) When the battery starts to go out, it can loose a page (not to be found until you put in new batteries) and it can forget your bookmark.

4.) When you scroll down, you can read the next page from the top, unless you reach the bottom of the page, then you must guess where to continue from.

For the under a hundred its OK.

  4. I love this e-book reader!

    Pros:

    - very readable even in low light environment

    - you can read pretty much anything (ePub, Mobi, PRC, RTF, .txt, .pdf, .fb2, .jpg, .gif, .png, and .bmp) without having to convert it to any particular format (I still haven’t tried any of the DRM proprietary formats)

    - no black screen when you turn pages as e-ink based readers

    - long life battery

    - uses standard batteries AA (you can use rechargeable as well)

    - expandable using SD cards

    - did I say affordable? For somebody that wants to try a reader for the first time, this is a very nice entry level.

    - solidly built

    Cons:

    - none so far

    Wish list:

    - auto-scrolling would be nice.

It has a setting to automatically turn pages, but it is kind of hard to get the right timing and, depending on the book format, some pages takes longer to read then others and you end up getting a page turn on you while you are in the middle of reading. Scrolling would be nice. Even better would be scrolling with speed adjustable on the fly by clicking the cursors.

    - a better handling of the PDF would be nice as well.

Right now you can zoom in and that is nice. Then you can scroll around using the cursor keys and still turn the page using the page turning slider. It would be nice if, after setting the zoom rate, you could use just one button (or the slider) to move down the page and, when the end is reached, the same control would switch to the top of next page instead of having to use a different button to turn the page.

Altogether I’m really really happy with my new toy!

  5. I bought mine in February and I love it! I used a free program to convert all my ebooks to epub (the format I prefer for the JBL) and put them on an SD card, then put the card into the reader, and there they are! I Love that it takes 4 AA batteries, instead of having to recharge via AC current. The screen is the perfect size for reading. Great to read indoors or out. I just wish Amazon had carried it, I paid more for mine!
